The Hull & District Theological Society was founded in 1957 to promote ‘the study of Theology in all its branches … within the University of Hull, the City of Kingston upon Hull, and the parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire round about’. It achieves these aims principally by hosting lectures given by distinguished visiting academics and by members. A list of the current year’s programme, and of past programmes, is available elsewhere on this site.
The Patron of the Society is the Archbishop of York, the Most Revd & Rt Hon. Dr John Sentamu.
The image above is of William Wilberforce (1759-1833), a native of Hull and later its MP. An amateur theologian (author of A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System … Contrasted with Real Christianity, 1797), he is most celebrated today for his successful campaign in Parliament against the slave trade.
